Read MoreI was recently at the Laker’s training facility on an assignment for Sports Illustrated, and a media frenzy broke out around Kobe. It’s pretty tough to get compelling shots when you’re jockeying with dozens of other cameras and mics, but I love these two angles that presented themselves.

Read MoreI was honored to be selected for the Eddie Adams Workshop, “Barnstorm XIV” this October in NYC. For the uninitiated, it is a 4-day, tuition free, intensive photojournalism workshop run by the most talented and dedicated photojournalism photographers, editors, and curators working in the industry. I had a pretty fantastic year, between Cambodia, a full plate of commercial photography, and spending my birthday at Burning Man, but, without question, this workshop was the highlight. My computer just “auto corrected” the word ‘workshop’ to ‘worship’, but that’s pretty accurate, it was a 4 day worship of storytelling through images.
The majority of our time we spent in a barn in upstate New York gleaning inspiration from a plethora of phenomenal photographers that had come to share their wisdom with the 100 students in attendance, and another good chunk of our time was spent having beers with those same photographers between the hours of midnight and 5am. But, the third and most exciting portion of the workshop was the opportunity to shoot an assignment and have it reviewed and edited by the very best the industry has to offer.
Our theme was “Transitions” and my story was a man names Frederick Gilles, a vet who, along with his wife, had just checked himself into a home for the elderly. My assignment was simply to show his struggle transitioning into this new way of life. My sincere thanks to Fred and Linda for letting me sit with them for these two days.

Read MoreI recently took photos of my neighbor Cynthia and her family, and her mom Fanny asked if I would photograph the members of her church for a fundraiser. So last week my assistant and I loaded up the van and drove down to the church, on 108th and Compton Blvd in South Los Angeles. It was a great day. Click below to view some of the photos.

I was just talking about how I was looking for a challenge, something to push me outside the box a bit, when my good friend Charlie, who designs UCLA Magazine, offered one up: 5 portraits, all formatted as panoramic landscapes, all quick shoots down and dirty, all over LA, all in 3 days.
